about

Lukie P’s new album Some Golden Dream began as a vision to create their most complete and impactful record – it turned into a journey in self-reliance and discovery. Singer-songwriter Luke Peters is no stranger to making records. As a founding member of Madison’s The Earthlings they contributed to the band’s first four albums before striking out on their own in 2015 with their first solo work LP. Nearly 10 years later and they are still perfecting their song craft on their latest album Some Golden Dream, out March 1st on Brainplate Records.

After releasing a debut album with indie trio Smelling Melons at the height of the pandemic in April 2020, Luke started writing songs for their third solo record. Stuck at home with the shows promoting the Melons canceled, the aim was to display their talents in a new record that captivated from start to finish. The resulting record however proved more of a challenge than anticipated. After a year of writing and demoing, they sought collaboration to complete the project. This led Luke to seek additional help from unexpected places. In fall 2021, they enrolled in a songwriting class with El Kempner, the singer-songwriter force behind the acclaimed indie rock band Palehound, which proved to be the turning point for the record. The short four hour class led to two of the songs on Some Golden Dream, but more importantly served as the songwriting spark for the remainder of the album.

With writing complete, Luke relied on years of recording experience to build a home studio in their Denver loft and performed nearly all the instrumentation on the album. Some Golden Dream was then brought further to life in mixing with half the record mixed by another indie powerhouse and Kempner collaborator Melina Duterte (Jay Som, Bachelor), and another more stripped down half mixed by fellow Earthling Noah Gilfillan.

The result is reminiscent of the later works of Elliott Smith: lush arrangements of bass, drums, and layered guitars side by side with more careful tunes of fingerpicked acoustics, shakers and hushed vocals. The lead single “Dragonfly”, acknowledges this influence head-on as drums and bass explode into a chorus of “Going in a figure 8 is going somewhere/You don’t need to know/Infinite helium takes you so far above/You don’t have to go”.

On Some Golden Dream, Lukie P showcases their dynamic talents, creating a world of inner discovery to escape to.
